Why Pets Need Regular Grooming
As a pet owner, you are likely aware grooming is essential for dogs and cats alike. However, you may not know exactly why that is. We have you covered with essential information below.
Four reasons your pet needs regular grooming include:
- Coat maintenance: Grooming can keep your pet’s fur clean and tangle-free. These things can prevent matting, which is beneficial. Matting is often uncomfortable for pets, as it can pull on their skin and limit movement.
- Shedding control: Many dog and cat breeds shed year-round or periodically. This can lead to hair ending up on furniture and clothes. Grooming can reduce the amount of hair around your home, helping you keep things clean and limiting the effects of allergies.
- Skin health: When our team grooms dogs and cats, they also look for signs of skin issues, such as infections or parasites like fleas and ticks. This makes grooming a great way to get ahead of problems that could negatively impact your pet’s skin.
- Preventing health issues: In addition to checking for skin problems, grooming allows us to look for abnormalities or lumps on pets. Identifying these things lends to timely treatment for underlying issues. Additionally, grooming can prevent ingrown nails, dental problems, and ear infections.

How Often Should You Professionally Groom Your Pets?
It depends on your pet’s coat type. Those with long or medium-length fur will need more frequent grooming. According to the American Humane Society, the ideal timeline for professionally grooming dogs with long hair is 4 to 8 weeks. Consult one of our specialists to determine an optimal schedule for your dog or cat.
At-Home Grooming Tasks
Between professional grooming sessions, you should perform at-home tasks to keep your pet’s fur, skin, and overall health in great condition.
These tasks include:
Brushing
For dogs and cats with long or curly hair, you should brush them daily. Dogs and cats with shorter hair only need weekly brushing. The same applies to dogs with double coats, such as golden retrievers.
Bathing
You might bathe your dog every one to three months. As for cats, the period could be four to six weeks. Your pet’s bathing schedule will depend on how often they spend time outside getting dirty, in addition to their breed and coat type.
Nail Trimming
Trimming your dog’s nails about once a month is best. You will want to trim cats' nails every two or three weeks. Be careful during trimming, and do not get close to the “quick” of your pet’s nails, as cutting this part can be painful for them.
Looking for Signs of Health Issues
While grooming your pet at home, you should look for skin or fur abnormalities and other issues. If you observe anything unusual or have concerns about your pet's health, reach out to us. We offer veterinary services that can benefit your pet, such as vaccinations, diagnostics, surgeries, and other treatments.
